
The genesis of each new Epicurean business or product concept can be traced back to a specific insight that abstractly aligned multiple factors into a cohesive critical equation. For this equation to be commercially viable, it must usually include: a core element of real innovation, some form of proprietary product content, unique positioning, accessible technology, a potentially interested consumer base, and an established distribution channel that requires minimal adaptation. This is the work of the "Innovation Team", lead by Michael Spinelli-Medici, Epicurean's co-founder and managing director.
Once all of these elements are clearly articulated, we create a preliminary "WorkPlan" that will guide all subsequent activities. This document programs the comprehensive development process into sequential "Phases" which are supported by timelines and budget estimates. From that point, everyone involved in the effort shares an overview of what is about to unfold over the subsequent 5-to-30 month period. It is also on the basis of this understanding that we profile a "venture structure" for those projects which involve multiple entities, defining the scope of their economic commitment, and the share of their equity in the resulting new business. Similarly, for client driven projects, the "WorkPlan" establishes a format for outlining the roles and responsibilities of each of the contributing participants on the client side, as well as the potential external suppliers and strategic partners.
During the initial phase, we identify all the core resources required to advance the concept as a brand-relevant or consumer-product-based commercial enterprise. Later, appropriate alliances will be established with several organizations and individuals who will contribute in various aspects of implementation.
As development evolves, strategic partners are engaged at the appropriate time for the introduction of their special expertise. As the venture assimilates additional key constituents, it builds momentum and advances more rapidly toward market introduction.
This process embraces certain spontaneous flexibilities, within the context of a carefully controlled methodology.
